106 days until the conference!

Let’s Hear From Past Attendees!

I attended the PLIDA International Perinatal Bereavement Conference in 2014 and would recommend this conference for all healthcare professionals working in the area of pregnancy loss and infant death.

I travelled from Dublin, Ireland to attend the 2014 conference. Given the conference was over spread across a number of days, this provided lots of time for networking and in-depth knowledge sharing with delegates.

Since the conference I have developed strong links with a number of delegates and we have worked together on a PLIDA position paper.

I attended pre-conference sessions on memory making and photography. These longer sessions were useful because they were a ‘deep dive’ into specific area of bereavement care. The conferenceprogram was varied, with lots of choice and I got to hear from speakers on a range of projects, initiatives and research from all across the US and Canada.

An important aspect of any conference is the ability to share material with colleagues. Given so much of the material from PLIDA was available electronically, this made it very easy to share with colleagues all across Ireland once I returned from PLIDA 2014.

Associate Professor University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing

Plenary Session #3: Conceptions and Mis-Conceptions: The Loss-lined Path to Parenthood of Lesbian Couples
Living in a heteronormative world, lesbian couples encounter biological and social constraints. In this session, that includes a bereaved couple, Dr. Black will explore various trajectories that describe efforts by lesbian couples to become parents, and participants will leave with an understanding of the specific challenges that lesbian couples face on their journey to parenthood.

This topic is an important one to be up to date on as we journey with our families, not matter their make up- Beth’s research is key to a supportive environment for our lesbian couples.

Plenary #2: State of the Science in Stillbirth Research
After a dramatic decrease 50 years ago, stillbirth rates in the US have been stable for decades. This workshop will explore why this is, as well as identify causes (such as infections, genetic abnormalities and placenta problems). Dr. Silver will also focus on the optimal timing of delivery and modifiable risk factors such as stress and obesity.

We hope that this great presentation will help you to support families better as the evidence can improve outcomes for our families who have already been through perinatal loss or those we are seeing in the antenatal period.

As well, we want to remind you to ask your conference planners about questions you have related to our upcoming conference which is just 239 days away.  Please email members@plida.org and your questions will be included in upcoming PLIDA Conference eblasts- after all, if you are asking, someone else is probably thinking about it.

Sharing the Wealth of Knowledge and Networking at this Conference with All You Know

One of the highlights of the International Perinatal Bereavement Conference, being held for the 20th time September 28 – October 1, 2016, in Tempe, AZ is the opportunity to meet new friends and reconnect with those you have met in the past. The conference sponsor, PLIDA, is sending this e-blast to you hoping that you will forward it to others in your field or on your team who may want to accompany you to the conference—or go on their own if you are not able to attend. We want to create an easy way to let others know of this exceptional educational opportunity.

Here are some important details:
The conference website, www.perinatalbereavementconference.org is the “go to” place for conference information. At this point you will find the conference brochure and the template for writing a letter to your manager or director, asking for organization support in attending.

Registration will open January 15 and is all online on the conference site.

There are numerous outside activities available in the Phoenix area, a list of which is posted on the website. Consider others from your department, people outside your department interested in bereavement work (nurses; social workers; chaplains; ultrasonographers; perinatal palliative care team; genetic counselors; child life specialists; respiratory therapists; maternal fetal medicine, neonatal, and ob/gyn physicians; past colleagues who now work at other institutions, anyone you know who is interested in perinatal bereavement, and those from professional organizations to which you belong. See what a wide circle you have?
